Taxi Vancouver commissioned artist David Billings to create this sand sculpture on Kitsilano beach to draw attention to summer water safety. Similar to Michelangelo Buonarroti’s Pietà , it depicts the tragedy of drowning.
Dale Miller, branch executive director of the Lifesaving Society of BC, told Canada’s Marketing Magazine: “It’s hard to measure whether [this sculpture] will change behavior, but it certainly will make people stop and think. And if even just that has them paying more attention to safety around the water, then it’s been successful.”
